Glitter, Sparkle & Shine.

14 Dec

‘Tis the season to break out your sequins and sparkles.

I love Christmastime for a lot of reasons but one is most definitely the ability to wear whatever you feel in the name of the season. Holiday parties are in full swing and rules that normally apply to the rest of the year; come December, don’t.

The Holidays bring about a chance for everyone to express themselves and I say the bolder, sparklier and brighter the better!

There are some basic rules to follow though when going for as I like to call it, “Sparkle Chic.”

1. Go for rich earth tones. (Navy, Emerald, Gold, Brown, Black, Gray & Cream)

2. Choose to wear it as an accent piece and make sure to pair it with something matte.

3. Don’t wear more than one item per outfit. (SEQUIN & SPARKLE OVERLOAD) Keep it subtle.

4. There is a huge disparity between hand sewn and machine sewn sequins. The latter is much more affordable but if you can, go for the hand sewn, the quality is better and the look is much richer.

5. Make sure to launder it appropriately and wear it with care. Sequins are expensive and difficult to repair.

So now that you know the rules(-ish), I ask you to go to the back of your closet and pull out the items you think are over the top. Try them on, take a strut around your bedroom and rethink your notion that you wouldn’t dare.

Fashion risks are always explainable and who doesn’t want to glisten anyway?

Luella says…Go Glitter.

What do you love to pull out of your closet and wear during the Holiday party season?

Go Green.

20 Nov

“The Emerald surpasses in its greenness all green stones, and even the leaves of plants, and it imparts to the air around it a green shimmer.”

Isidorus, Bishop of Seville 640 A.D.

I love the color Emerald. It is the color of the Earth. Of trees and grass and leaves and nature.

In fashion, I love the subtlety of Emerald when paired with primary colors and the way it brings a warmness to my skin tone.

It is timeless so I suggest next time you are shopping,  if you come across a piece in this shade of green, buy it and make  it a permanent fixture in your wardrobe.

Blonde, Brunette or Red hair doesn’t matter because it works for all of us.

It also is a perfect pop color for home decor. A subtle accent on the wall or a simple throw on a bed can make a room have depth. Try it for yourself.

If I had to choose three words to best describe Emerald-Green, they would be warm, rich and decadent.

Luella says…An Ode to Emerald.

After thinking about it,  I realized it also reminds me of Christmas and the onset of the Holidays with Mistletoe and Evergreens.

What does it evoke for you?

What color do you love?

I’m in the mood for Autumn. Growing up in the Midwest, Fall was represented by the changing of the trees and a brisk cool turn in the weather. It marked a time when we had to officially transition our wardrobes into “Winter wear”. Now I live in Southern California and the transition is a bit more subtle. Either way, I love this time of year. It makes me want to cook hearty food, light musky, earthy candles and have a fire in the fireplace. It makes me want to snuggle.

Dresses truly are year round MUST staples. (At least in my closet.)  They are easy and comfortable and depending upon where you are reading from, can be underneath the layers you may have to add-on. While there are a couple Dreaming price point dresses below, the majority are Steals. Don’t believe me, click and find out.

A rule of thumb, is to try to create a nice balance in your closet of all price/designer ranges. Remember Sharon Stone wore a Gap turtleneck with a Valentino trumpet skirt to the Oscars back in 1996. Don’t be afraid to pair one of the choices below with an unexpected riding boot, close-toed wedge or flats. (They were the craze this season on the runway!) Fashion is your chance to make a statement. Be bold.
